Alcohol Fuel Information

Alcohol burners/stoves run on denatured alcohol (a.ka. ethanol, methylated spirits, marine stove fuel), methanol or similar fuels. Denatured alcohol is available at any hardware store and makes an excellent fuel for alcohol burners. Denatured alcohol is the same alcohol that is found in alcoholic beverages, but it has been "denatured" or poisoned so it cannot be used for human consumption. Every brand of denatured alcohol is slightly different, but most burn very efficiently and produce no soot or smoke. Unlike petroleum fuels, denatured alcohol is a renewable fuel (made from corn). Also, it's vapors are non-explosive and it can be extinguished with water in an emergency making it safer for marine use than petroleum fuels. Another great feature of denatured alcohol is that it can be carried in virtually any plastic container making it very easy to transport and dispense. It can even be taken on airplanes which is not true of petroleum fuels such as white gas (Coleman® fuel) or pressurized gas cylinders. This is a handy feature when traveling to your next adventure!
